Slope Restoration

Landscape Design 5

Planting Design

In this course, plants and plant groups are studied as basic design elements in the landscape. Instruction emphasizes the arrangement of plant materials for defining, sequencing, and articulating space. Ecological and cultural contexts are examined as determinants for sharply focused design concepts.

Project 2: Slope Restoration

Slope Planting Plan

Student: Michael Bircumshaw

A short suburban connector street, slotted between slopes, itself sloped end to end. For the individual residents whose daily drives will be draped by the foliage, planting material choices present seasonal interest. The North-South Up-Down Axis of the street provide progressive storytelling moments along multiple planes along the route of travel, further presenting light and shadow interplay opportunities. The hope is to foster decades-long narratives filled with its imaginary figures, talisman, and wild-animal sightings spontaneously happening just outside the window.
