Landscape Design 3

Advanced Site Design

This course introduces students to the landscape architectural design process, emphasizing site inventory, analysis, program, design, and concept development. Objectives of the class include the development of professional-level analysis, design, and presentation graphics for larger scale projects with an emphasis on digital media tools; encouragement to pursue case study research as a basis for improving understanding of a project’s spatial and dimensional characteristics through comparative analysis; and introduction to a more structured design process for larger sites. The project site is the approximately 14-acre Civic Arts Plaza: a regional performing arts and civic center that includes City Hall, the Kavli and Scherr theaters and a five-level parking structure.

To honor everyone’s hard work and keep the process fair, the judges chose not to confer awards for LD3 this time. With limited review time, they couldn’t provide the level of specific, consistent evaluation your projects deserve. Every team put in impressive effort, and the jury deeply appreciates your dedication. We’ll focus on sharing constructive notes where possible and celebrating the learning that came from this studio.

 Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza

Student: Brian Bautista

This projected was located at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. The brief was to redesign the site to serve community needs better, providing much needed gathering spaces with flexible use in mind while navigating and engaging with the site’s unique topography and architecture. This design was inspired by the plant Tule and the design focuses on restoring the native ecology to the site while also honoring the original indigenous people who once lived here before their forced removal. The product is a series of interlinked plazas and natural spaces across the site, creating a focal point to Downtown Thousand Oaks while melding the human needs of the Civic Arts Plaza with the ecological needs of the native flora and fauna.
