2020 Capstone Project

ASLA HONOR AWARD

Martha Martinez

Connecting to The Pacoima Wash
The Pacoima Wash is a concrete channel that acts as a wedged barrier between two communities – the City of San Fernando and the neighboring southeastern area of Los Angeles. The channel blocks access to much-needed parkland. The lack of open green space prevents people from engaging in an active physical lifestyle. This project's design transforms ordinary streets and empty lots into a flexible, multi-purpose space that will connect communities and promote active living among residents. The project also focuses on safe streetscapes connecting to local amenities within the San Fernando Recreational Park's boundaries. Through Landscape Architecture, green space allows physical and passive activity by providing meandering walkways and trails for people to stroll and experience nature through a sea of trees within the city.
