Shifting Sands: A Pilot For Adaptive Coastal Wetland Migration In The Face Of Climate Impacts

Julia Bennett

SCASLA Excellence Award

The judges were highly impressed by the project’s clarity, strong goal setting, and the successful integration of the student’s passion for marine science into the design. The presentation was praised for its beautiful graphics, cohesive narrative, and effective communication of both present and future conditions. The design process was well-articulated, with clear, attainable goals and a compelling progression through the work. The project was noted for its comprehensibility and its potential as a valuable community asset, with the overall presentation described as “beautiful” and “very successful.”

In the face of inevitable climate impacts along our coastlines it is vital to establish a cultural and practical alliance with the associated risks to better inform our landscape design interventions. By connecting a private 10-acre golf course to the adjacent Malibu Lagoon, creating an expanded wetland habitat and State Park, this design will employ solutions that acknowledge the need for adaptive infrastructure in coastal environments, while enhancing public access, stewardship and education around this vital ecosystem.

About Julia

In addition to being an aspiring landscape architect, Julia has a background in marine science and photography. Her career has been largely centered around exploring the intersections between science, design, visual art, and the contemporary social landscape, focusing on how those intersections influence our understanding of a natural world in transition.

She is thrilled to begin the next chapter of her landscape architecture journey by working on projects in the public realm that provide opportunities for meaningful interactions with nature for people throughout Los Angeles.
