In Defiance of Barriers

Andrew Steiger

SCASLA Achievement Award

The judges were impressed with the cohesive and visually subdued presentation, highlighting the beautiful analysis and strong renderings. They particularly appreciated the ambition of the proposed changes to the river, as well as the thoughtful incorporation of community elements, such as the Compton Cowboys and agricultural programming. The project’s consistent flow and well-executed diagrams made the thought process easy to follow, and the concept diagrams were bold and well-presented.

This project challenges barriers created by the abandoned Compton Par 3 Golf Course and the reach of the LA River that runs along its banks by transforming two halves into an interconnected natural refuge for human and non human beings. Offering a place of rest for both the community of Compton and the migratory Steelhead Trout, this park will provide a symbolic experience through interactive sculptural works that tether visitors to the trout’s journey through the LA River Watershed. These works will provide a powerful reminder of the connection between humans and the natural world that supports us. By transforming the site into a public park we have the opportunity to restore part of the historic LA River Floodplain, reconnect valuable wildlife corridors and migratory habitat, and provide respite and new recreational opportunities to the community.

About Andrew

Andrew Steiger is a multidisciplinary artist from Kingsgate, WA, whose work is deeply inspired by the natural world. His pieces explore the tensions between the natural landscape and human development. Beyond his painting and illustrations, Andrew has led several creative ventures, including founding a global menswear line, establishing an art gallery, and creative directing an Art + Wilderness magazine.

Seeking to address real-world environmental challenges through an artistic lens, Andrew transitioned to landscape architecture. While enrolled in the UCLA Extension Program, he was awarded the 2022 CLASS Fund Scholarship, nominated for the 2024 Joseph Linesch Scholarship, and recognized with the 2024 ASLA Student Merit Award. His work focuses on projects that balance natural and human needs, emphasizing watershed health and native plant restoration through earthworks, meadow design, and cultural revitalization.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Andrew is exploring plant compositions in his test plot “Meadow 1” and will launch an outdoor design studio, Tether, with his partner this fall.
