Common Ground: Creating Equitable Space between Commerce and Community
This project addresses a low- income, semi-rural community impacted by industrial development nearby. An open site which borders a neighborhood and a forthcoming industrial campus will become a publicly accessible recreation and habitat park. The concept explores bridging the space between this once-quiet community and the rapid growth it faces, including increased traffic, pollution and a large daily workforce. Through green infrastructure, spatial equity and user-centered site planning a “common ground” is established as the heart of the neighborhood, connecting commerce and community. Design solutions include pollution mitigation strategies, brand new public amenities and dedicated habitat preservation zones. Lastly, several key areas will share the narrative of Fontana’s history as a hub for industry and commerce.
