The Student Chapter
of ASLA at UCLA Extension

Established in 1977, UCLA Extension's Landscape Architecture Certificate program is designed for working professionals who already have at least a bachelor's degree. It is a rigorous, 3-year program that prepares students to enter the field of landscape architecture upon completion of the curriculum.

The Landscape Architecture Certificate program is designed to give students a strong foundation in the design, technical, and theoretical aspects of the discipline. The curriculum is structured as a sequence of design, technical, and breadth courses. The goal of the program is to integrate these three areas into a single body of knowledge so that each segment is understood in the context of its relevance to the others.

AUGUST 2019

Paramour Estate Tour

Saturday in a Park Field Trip 3: 2019–2020 SCASLA President, Walker Young, acquaints students with the Paramour Estate located in Silverlake. Students' tour of the estate included the mansion interior, cabanas, swimming pool area, and the hillside grounds.

Saturday in a Park Field Trip 2: Mary Rasmussen, Pedro Chutsz and Hilary Watts take a break from hiking around the Little Tujunga Wash tributary park in Burbank.

Field Study
with David Squires

Field Study Trip 1: On an informative Saturday morning at Stoneland USA, Design Graphics Professor, David Squires, familiarizes a group of students with high-end finishing materials such as natural stone and tile. Followed by a visit to the PDC showroom, Creative Environments, discussions included fabrication, scheduling, and cost specifics. Lunch followed at Urth Caffe.

Striving for success

The development of observation, drawing and computer graphic skills at UCLA Extension gave me a new language to communicate my ideas. This visual language has boosted my confidence to explore ideas and expand the way I design.

I’ve always been fascinated by how we relate with one another in the physical world. What is our experience in the space between buildings? What is the role of nature in these connections? How can these connections be improved? The program gave me the technical skills I needed to illustrate my ideas and the forum to collaborate with others to make these stories the best that they can be.

Landscape Architecture impacts people constantly, and they don’t even know it. The way spaces are designed can force you to meet people, have interactions, and make friends. Most of us think we don’t really have time for that stuff, but when a space forces you to do that, you come out of it having had a much better experience.

Stacie Preven

The program erased a blindness I didn’t even know I had. I now realize I used to look at the world but not really see it. I started noticing the size of spaces, the placement of benches, the embrace of trees ... What’s wrong with this space? What could I do to make this better? Six months in the program and I learned to be aware of my surroundings.
It truly feels like I was re-born.
