The Garden at Garden Street: A Place for Community and Nature to Thrive in the Funk Zone<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Funk Zone of Santa Barbara is a delicate ecosystem balancing a diverse community of artists, craftspeople, and small businesses between downtown and the waterfront. The future of this neighborhood is unclear as development threatens to sanitize the unique character of the funk. Historically, the area was an estuary that was filled with a landfill and later became home to two thirds of the city\u2019s black population. This site represents an opportunity to heal the relationship to the land and to each other. The Garden at Garden Street re-imagines an industrial shipping container yard as a community space. The design will help to connect people with nature by fostering a strong connection to the original coastal wetland environment. Additionally, flexible community gathering spaces will be created while incorporating the neighborhood vernacular architecture through adaptive reuse and public art. The site will also demonstrate the best practices determined by the City of Santa Barbara for wetland restoration, storm water management, and sea level rise adaptation. By utilizing these strategies, the project will become a source of life itself, with an abundance of food, water, wildlife, human connection, and beauty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always had a deep fascination and appreciation for all living things. Some of my most fulfilling experiences have been working as a propagator in a greenhouse, horticulturist at a botanic garden, and an outdoor educator in the mountains. These experiences have led me to believe that landscapes are both the foundation and inspiration for our communities and ecosystems.

I bring my passions for people, plants, and ecology to the field of landscape architecture. I love spending time outdoors and I hope to share that love through the creation of beautiful and thoughtful spaces that nourish us.
