People. Plants. Purpose. The Revitalization of Commonwealth Nursery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A fatality of Proposition 13 in the late 1970’s, the 11-acre Commonwealth Nursery in southeast Griffith Park ran as a functioning nursery supplying plants for LA parks and city-owned businesses since 1928. For 50 years, the greenhouse roofs were able to capture rainwater for use six months out of the year. The nursery offered horticulture education, training for City Parks staff, and provided a site for children to learn about plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design demonstrates how landscape architecture can re-develop an abandoned area that has potential for community engagement, re-establishing its plant propagation program, and give new purpose through efficient maintenance of water, power, and ecology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
