Design as a Catalyst: Using Universal Design to Create Equitable Public Space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) has greatly improved many public spaces for those with disabilities. But accessibility often falls short of inclusivity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First-hand experience as a wheelchair user inspired and guided the redesign of an existing 17-acre public park in Burbank. This site was initially designed for able-bodied users. This redesign aims to create open and active spaces that can be accessed and enjoyed by users of all physical and cognitive abilities. The removal of physical access obstacles and the use of multi-sensory wayfinding elements create a community space that can be equitably used and enjoyed. In addition, an existing poorly-placed veterans memorial is relocated and given new life as a quiet space for reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
